The ghostly image which appeared on a cloth allegedly used to wipe the face of Jesus during the crucifixion is a mysterious relic which has not been seen publicly since the 17th century. There are several artistic renderings but the most famous is probably this one by Austrian painter Gabriel Von Max created in 1874.
This lithograph dates from the 1920s and features a tag on the bag which claims "If You Watch the Eyes Closely, They will Suddenly Open!"
